WMAA

Our friend and fellow club member Bob Fox passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 6, 1998 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Bob was the club Treasurer for several years and was well known by all members.

In memory of Bob, his service to the club and his love of large scale radio controlled model airplanes, the club members voted to rename the annual WMAA Big Bird event in Bob's honor.

The following President's column appeared in the July 1998 WMAA Club Newsletter.   It is a fine tribute to Bob Fox.

The Prez Sezs ...

By Bob Bush

On Sunday, June 7, 1998, I received one of those calls we all dread.  Ron Suever informed me that I had lost a good friend.  I just couldn't believe that Robert Fox passed away Saturday, June 6, 1998 while on a trip to Greensboro, North Carolina.

Bob's wife, Jan, and his children were always first in his life, however his flying and enjoyment of the outdoors certainly took second place.  At the graveside, it was related how Bob always looked forward to the family dinner on New Years Day.  But the dinner always waited until he returned from the club's Annual Freeze Fly event at the flying field.

The WMAA club meant a lot to Bob.  He was always working behind the scenes, and did more for the club than most people are aware of.  For almost ten years he was our club treasurer and made sure that we stayed within our budget.  He was a fiscal conservative when dealing with our moneys.  He always knew down to the hot dog how much food there was for an event.  I know the food will never be the same.

Bob introduced me to the WMAA.  My wife, Keely, used to wait on Bob when he came to the store where she worked.  He was always looking for rubber stamps of planes and nose art.  They got to talking one day and my wife told him that I was interested in radio control.  He immediately gave her his number and told her to have me call him.   He was always willing to share with others his knowledge and love of the sport.

While it is never easy to lose a good friend, we can take solace in the fact that Bob's passing was peaceful.  Bob now has the wings to fly, and he'll never again have to worry about crashing.

The next time you're at the field, try to enjoy your flight and your friend with the same enthusiasm and love that Bob did, and your sky will be much clearer.

On behalf of all the members of the WMAA and WAGS, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife, Jan, and all Bob's family.
