The WMAA/WAGS Youth Outreach ScholarshipWhat is it?
The recipient of this award will receive a full scholarship to
participate in the next Build and Fly class. What is the Build
and Fly Class? The purpose of
this class is to instruct participants to properly construct and fly a model
aircraft. The class begins in
January and meets for 9 weeks on every
Saturday from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at
Capstone Hobbies in Westerville. It
is led by Mike Barbee, one of the most accomplished modelers in the nation.
Upon completion of the construction phase, the class will adjourn to the
flying field to begin flight training. Training
time varies with student’s commitment, but we would expect this session to be
completed within a two month period. What is included in
this scholarship? The recipient
of this scholarship will receive nearly all of the equipment needed to build and
fly a model aircraft. This
includes, but is not limited to, the airplane kit, the radio equipment
(transmitter, servos, receiver, batteries), engine and glue.
In addition the recipient will receive detailed instruction in the Build
and Fly Class (See description of Build and Fly Class below).
The student will also receive special attention from the instructors
throughout the process. The
student, parent or guardian will be encouraged to use this resource in during
all periods of the class. The
value of these materials is estimated to at $300. What is not included
in the scholarship? In order to
fly at our field, your child will need to be a member of the Academy of Model
Aeronautics (AMA). The annual
membership fee is $1. Applications
can be found at www.modelaircraft.org.
Among other benefits, the AMA provides Liability Protection for accidents
arising from the operation of model aircraft, rockets, cars, and boats, This
applies to bodily injury or property damage caused by an AMA member. In addition, the tools needed to construct the aircraft,
fuel and field equipment are not included in the scholarship.
We would estimate that these items would cost approximately $75.
Please note however that the club members typically take the scholarship
winner “under their wing” and attempt to provide a number of these
incidentals. There is however no
guarantee that these items will be provided. Who is eligible?
Anyone from the ages of 7 to 15. Who are we?
The Westervillle Model Aeronautics
Association (WMAA) is a local chapter of the Academy
of Model Aeronautics. The
Academy of Model Aeronautics is an association of modelers organized for the
purpose of promotion, development, education and advancement of modeling
activities. The Academy provides leadership, organization, competition,
communication, protection, representation, recognition, education and
scientific/technical development to modelers.
For further information on our club please visit our website at www.wmaa-wags.org. What do we require from the parent or guardian? Please note that significant time commitment is needed from your child to complete the class. In addition to the hours spent in classroom instruction, you can expect that your child will need to spend 5 to 10 hours per week constructing the model. We also expect that once the plane is constructed that your child will spend at least 2 to 3 hours each week learning to fly. We expect the parent or guardian to provide consistent support (including but not limited to transportation) in this endeavor. Although club members will try to make this process as seamless as possible for the parent or guardian, we expect this party to provide a helping hand to their child wherever possible. We believe that without this support, the chance for the child to succeed is nil. Why are we doing this? One of our most distinguished members, Lenny Scheren, was awarded a $1,000 honorarium from the Davidson Institute For Talent Development. Lenny was given this award in recognition of his mentorship of a nine year old member of our club. The Davidson Institute was formed in 1999 for the purpose of supporting profoundly gifted young people and to provide them opportunities to nurture and develop their talents. The club, with Lenny’s support, has decided to set up a special fund to continue to further the cause of the Davidson Institute through this scholarship. What is required? 1.
Applicants will be required to compose an essay of at least 250 words
detailing why they would like to build and fly a model aircraft (past experience
building models, school projects involving aeronautics, other history of
interest would be relevant, but not necessary) 2.
Completion of the application.
3.
A copy of the applicant’s most recent report card. 4.
A brief hand written note from the parent or guardian stating their
agreement to support their child in this endeavor and their understanding of the
commitment required. 5. A signed copy of the attached waiver of liability included in the application. Mail
